The first annual U.S. J/70 Youth Championship was held from August 11th to 13th, 2017. The event was hosted by SAIL NEWPORT, Newport, Rhode Island at their Fort Adams State Park facility.
The winner of the 2017 event was the Santa Barbara YC Youth Team.
In 2018, the event will be hosted by St Petersburg YC in St Petersburg, Florida. Dates T.B.A.
The goal of this event is to help develop and build leading-edge junior keelboat sailing programs across America.
The U.S. J/70 Youth Championship (USJYC) is open to twelve (12) Youth Teams representing US Sailing recognized Sailing Clubs or Organizations.
Sailing clubs may enter more than one team in any qualifier, but may only qualify one team for the USJYC in Newport.
The 12 Youth Teams will compete on six provided J/70 Class sailboats with class sails (main, jib, spinnaker) that comply with J/70 Class rules. The boats will be identically rigged and tuned at “base settings” that are recommended by the sailmaker.
In 2017, ten teams ultimately qualified for the USJYC. The winners of the qualifying events are listed below:
